Some Ramblings on DVD Storage

Whenever I get sick, I find myself in need of a mental reboot. I need a clean start, and for some reason, that always manifests itself in me rearranging my room. Granted, I’m doing that all the time, because my room is always a work of progress and forever in some state of upheaval. But it’s especially nice at times like this to have a space I can decompress in.

I always find it comforting to just sit with my DVDs. It makes me happy just being in the room with them no matter where they are, but I’ve also been wanting a better way of storing them. I’d love to show you my incredibly aesthetic room, where they're all alphabetized and organized and I know exactly where everything is. Well, I know exactly where everything is, but nothing is organized. I’ve got DVDs in boxes, baskets, shoeboxes, and bookshelves. They’re stacked against the walls, sitting in drawers, piled on the floor… it’s a mess. I still haven’t figured out how to stack things on the floor in a way that looks like they’re meant to be there. How do people do that?

Of course, the simple solution to this storage problem could be to just stop buying books and movies, but that would be blasphemy! I get most of my books and DVDs from thrift stores and library bookstores, but since I haven’t been out at all the past few weeks, the amount of stuff I have has remained mostly stable (save for the As Time Goes By series I talked about last week). I’m taking advantage of this time to figure out another way of storing everything, but until then, here’s a sampling of where some my DVDs are…

On the floor…

In "trees..."

The movie shoebox (which is quickly just becoming the Criterion shoebox). Any ideas on how I can decorate the front?

I had to clean out a whole drawer to fit more DVDs! This is where I keep my box sets.

Stacked against the wall...

This basket isn’t the most efficient means of storing movies, but it gets the job done.

You get the idea! We acquired a shallow bookcase-like shelf from the thrift store a couple months ago that might work well for DVD storage, and if it does, I’m hoping it’ll put the rest of the room into perspective. Admittedly, there’s a certain charm to sitting among baskets and shoeboxes, but I think it’ll be nice to get organized.

What’s next?

Thanks for bearing with me the past few weeks with these low-maintenance blog posts. I’m slowly getting better, and I have some exciting things that I can’t wait to share with you soon!

For now, I’ve added some new titles to the DVD Caption Guide, including As Time Goes By, The Manchurian Candidate, and American Graffiti. I have some blog post ideas that I haven’t had energy to work on, but am looking forward to writing as soon as possible!

In the meantime, here’s what I’ve been…

Watching:
The Rockford Files, of course (every weeknight at 8 and every weekend at 1). Gene Kelly’s birthday was a few days ago, so I celebrated by watching Summer Stock and Singin’ in the Rain.
I’ve had to put As Time Goes By on pause briefly, as the series I bought didn’t have subtitles. I returned it and am waiting for a different DVD set to arrive that will hopefully be accessible!

Listening to:
The theme song from The Great Escape. Obsessively. Repeatedly. It’s funny—I saw the movie a month ago, but the theme song has only become an earworm in the past ten days or so. I want to see it again soon, but I’m also not ready for the pain, so I guess listening to the music is my way of scratching the itch for now!

Reading:
The Garner Files (James Garner and John Winokur), Home Work (Julie Andrews), and Growing Up in Disneyland (Ron DeFore).

Despite the health issues, it’s been a peaceful time, filled with lots of good movies and fun television.

I hope wherever you’re at, you’ve also been able to find some peace this weekend. I’m sending best wishes for a wonderful week!

If you'd like, you can leave a comment and tell me how you store your DVDs. I'd love some ideas!

Until next time, keep living vintage!
