On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was published!

If you’ll indulge me for a moment, I’d like to post about a modern movie on this topic that my family and I greatly enjoy. It’s called The Man Who Invented Christmas, and details the struggles and inspirations that led to Dickens’ writing of the classic story.

Authors will no doubt get an extra kick out of certain parts (like the characters following Dickens around, or Dickens’ process of trying to come up with a character’s name).

The film stars Dan Stevens and Christopher Plummer, and was released in 2017. It became a family tradition of ours just a few years ago, and our annual watch happened to be tonight!

If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a treat. Hope you enjoy!

To Sir, With Love was wonderful! Poitier’s performance was just captivating. I loved the Victoria and Albert Museum scene—it was a clever idea to do it as a montage instead of just a straight scene. (I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the museum scene from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was inspired by this one.)

I appreciated that the movie overall was gentle in nature, and that certain plot points didn’t have to be spelled out in order for the audience to understand what was happening. In fact, the effect was even more powerful that way. I think that’s something we could learn from today in modern filmmaking.

This is my third Sidney Poitier movie. The others I’ve seen are Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and Lilies of the Field. Which one should I watch next? Any recommendations?

I realized I never made a post when I saw Lilies of the Field about a week and a half ago! I absolutely loved it. It was both humorous and touching. The sassy banter between Homer Smith and the nuns was great.
Tonight I watched To Sir, With Love for the first time, which I very much enjoyed. I’ll make a post about it tomorrow!
