Six Movies That Deserve a Criterion DVD Release

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies
This movie deserves a Criterion DVD on its own merits, but to be honest, I also just really want to know what the cover artwork would look like. I love the Criterion interpretations of the movies, and Millions provides so much content to work with.

Harold and Maude
I was lucky enough to snag the now-out-of-print edition on eBay for 15 bucks, and I think Criterion should bring it back so others can enjoy it! I honestly wouldn’t change anything about this particular release—I would just reinstate it exactly as is.

Grease
Classics come in all shapes and sizes, and I’ve always appreciated that Criterion recognizes that. Yes, they’ll include the essential black and white movies, and the moody foreign films that contemplate mortality, but they’ll also throw in ones like Moonstruck and Tootsie—movies that are also obvious classics, but that I’ve nonetheless seen some movie buffs turn their noses up at. I think Grease fits that category—sure, it may not be arthouse, but it’s a heck of a good time, and I think a lot of fun could be had with the Criterion edition.

The Endless Summer
This is a surfing documentary from 1966, in which we follow Robert August and Michael Hynson as they surf their way around the globe, chasing the “endless summer.” It feels like a movie as opposed to a documentary in many ways, and would be a fun addition to Criterion’s catalogue.

Sunset Boulevard
In my mind, a lot of movies that receive the Criterion treatment are ones that really pack a wallop, and Sunset Boulevard certainly does that! I can already picture the cover for this one being the sidewalk stamped with “SUNSET BLVD.”

Cover Girl
Cover Girl has a slightly different feel than a lot of Gene’s other musicals, and I think a Criterion release would be divine. Gene Kelly’s widow, Patricia, has done a wonderful job preserving his legacy, and perhaps she could lend some insight into the film as part of the DVD’s special features.

When I made this list, it had a lot more than six on it, but I thought it would be more fun to break them up into several installments. When I first discovered Criterion, my thoughts were “these are really cool, but I don’t need every DVD I own to be by them… just certain ones.” Well now, my attitude is “if there’s a Criterion edition of this movie, I’m getting it!”

See you next time for another installment of “how many times can Becca say the word “Criterion” in a single post?”!
